iUE AT THE URBAN RETROFIT INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

In early September 2025, our team joined the International Symposium of the Urban Retrofit project in Glasgow, where iUE is an international partner supporting capacity building and knowledge sharing activities.

Over two days, project partners and other professionals exchanged ideas on net-zero planning strategies and retrofitting at both neighbourhood and city levels. With participants from the EU, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England, Canada, Australia, Colombia, South Africa, and the US, the symposium offered a unique opportunity to discuss case studies from diverse contexts and share insights on density, housing, climate, and planning from different perspectives.

As the partner responsible for the European and Latin American hubs, iUE organized two presentations for the session International Retrofit. Project officers Alice Jelmini and Mariana Binder presented iUE’s work as part of the European REGEN project, where the Consortium works towards decarbonizing European neighbourhoods and cities. Representing the Latin American hub, iUE invited Ingrid Novoa, from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia, who gave a presentation on grassroots movements, community-led initiatives, and retrofitting in informal contexts in Bogotá.

The symposium also featured the official launch of the project’s first major publication Urban Retrofit: A Systematic Evidence Review, along with study tours of regeneration projects in Glasgow, and a special lecture exploring planning in relation to de-growth and post-growth.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration within the Urban Retrofit project to strengthen place-based resilience and advance sustainable futures!
